Profile

GORTER LEGAL was established in July 2005 by Marja Gorter. After having been active in legal matters as attorney-at-law and thereafter as in-house counsel, both at national and international level, she decided to benefit from her expertise and experience through her own advisory firm. Via cooperation with other colleagues active in the legal field she warrants an uninterrupted and reliable support to clients of GORTER LEGAL.

Mrs. Marja Gorter:
After graduation in Netherlands Antilles and Dutch law (1989 and 1990 respectively) she worked as an attorney-at-law during 10 years for the law firm NautaDutilh. In the Rotterdam office she focused on ship and aircraft finance, maritime law and thereafter on mergers and acquisitions. Subsequently she worked in the New York office for US based clients doing business in the Netherlands, the Dutch-Caribbean (mainly Curaçao and Aruba). In particular she was active in the field of corporate law, banking law, financing, mergers and acquisitions and contract law. Upon her return from New York at the end of 1999, she switched from attorney to in-house counsel. Initially Mrs. Gorter worked as senior corporate counsel for Royal Ahold NV, thereafter as Director Legal and Corporate Secretary for Atradius NV (formerly: Nederlandsche Credietverzekering Maatschappij NV, “NCM”) and subsequently as Senior Corporate Vice-President Legal & Compliance at LeasePlan Corporation N.V., also member of their Corporate Management Team. As of January 2018 she opted exclusively for entrepreneurship and accepted a variety of roles with clients of GORTER LEGAL, including Takeaway.com Payments B.V., Amsterdam (executive board member with focus on financial regulatory and compliance matters).

At Ahold the focus was on the issue of stocks/bonds within the Netherlands and abroad, as well as mergers and acquisitions and joint ventures in Latin America. At Atradius Marja Gorter headed the group legal department (17 lawyers in 8 countries). She worked from the offices in Amsterdam and in Cologne, Germany. During the aforesaid years all possible legal matters were laid in the hands of Mrs. Gorter. As a result, she has gained substantial experience in a diversity of legal matters in a large number of legal systems worldwide. At LeasePlan, a bank regulated in the Netherlands, she coordinated all mattes for the legal and compliance departments in 32 countries and focused on rendering advice and acting in matters from a legal and compliance perspective. She supported both the Executive Board and the Non-Executive Board on relevant matters, including corporate governance matters.

Development of her knowledge keeps pace with the developments in the corporate legal environment including the financial/insurance world. After graduation as bachelor in the laws of the Netherlands Antillles (1989) and of the Netherlands (1990), she followed many more courses relevant for legal and compliance. She continues to do so. In 2007 she graduated from the Free University of Amsterdam in Corporate Compliance, received her certificate in the New Board Program of Nyenrode University in Breukelen and in 2017 the certificate in the General Counsel Executive Program (Rotterdam School of Management).
